Creating Awareness About Marijuana in the Workplace - 2020

The impact of marijuana use on the workplace is skyrocketing. State after state legalizes its use, not just for medicinal purposes, but for recreational ones too. At the same time, the Feds haven't legalized any of its use.
The two most common questions employers have are:
  • Our company does drug screenings, and an employee has provided a medical marijuana card. How do we handle that?
  • Our state allows recreational marijuana. What does this mean if we have a drug-free workplace policy?
The answers to these questions involve numerous factors, including but not limited to the following.
  • The state they are in
  • Why somebody is using it (medicinally or recreationally)
  • How recently they used it
  • The safety aspects of their job
  • The company's policy on marijuana use
In this training, Don will summarize the challenges faced by employers in managing employee marijuana use, explain the law addressing this subject, describe relevant marijuana testing devices, and analyze recent court cases. He'll finish with a few words of advice for the wise.

The impact of marijuana use on the workplace is skyrocketing. State after state legalizes its use, not just for medicinal purposes, but for recreational ones too. At the same time, the Feds haven’t legalized any of its use.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), studies suggest specific links between marijuana use and adverse consequences in the workplace, such as the increased risk for injury or accidents. One study among postal workers found that employees who tested positive for marijuana on a pre-employment urine drug test had 55 percent more industrial accidents, 85 percent more injuries, and 75 percent greater absenteeism, compared with those who tested negative for marijuana use.
Not only is legalization a new problem for management, it’s also a new problem for law enforcement and the courts. Defining what it means to be "under the influence" is difficult at best, and there are few accurate measuring methods available. Thankfully that is beginning to change

The Proper Way to Correct I-9 Documents and Not Pay Penalties

Surprising as it might sound, many employers are either unaware of I-9 documents penalties and fines, or are willing to take the risk of noncompliance. This is a very bad situation to be in, something that has been compounded by the fact that the regulatory agencies are communicating more than ever before on this topic. The way in which the departments communicate with each other makes it easier for them to target employers. Yet, the fact is that most complaints come from disgruntled employees, while others come from audits of target industries. Moreover, the DHS developed a new I-9 Form effective from January 21, 2017, which has to be used immediately. This makes it imperative for employers to be aware of all the new guidelines for completing the new I-9 form as well as the ongoing regulations. A webinar that is being organized by Traininng.com, a leading provider of professional training for all the areas of regulatory compliance, will give proper understanding and perspective on ...

Changing Behavior: Why Rewards and Punishments Often Aren't Enough

Major changes have been taking place at the workplace. Today, the workforce is no longer a staid or static one. It is lively, vibrant and mobile. No organization can expect to retain a workforce in which wholehearted appreciation is not forthcoming or where the employees do not make a difference. Organizations judge employees on the quality of their own work, but also that of their team members. This makes it necessary for individuals to assist their team members and help them raise their standards. However, with each employee being unique, one standard method or principle cannot be applied across the board. Team members, especially Leads and Managers, need to learn the fundamentals of human motivation if they have to motivate and engage each employee and the entire team for top performance in tune with their unique strengths, attitudes and skillsets. Some of the questions they have to pose to themselves and be able to answer include: What works well and what doesn’t? How effecti...

Undeniable Proof That You Need Construction-OSHA 2019

Many employers consider an OSHA Safety Program as a burden on their time and resources. They could not be more mistaken in their thinking than this. Considering an exercise that potentially saves them hundreds of thousands of dollars as being such is nothing other than a misplaced notion. It is only when employees suffer from injuries at the workplace and OSHA discovers that the workplace did not have the proper OSHA regulations in place that employers start feeling the heat of the non-implementation of this regulation. It is to help them avoid such a scenario that Traininng.com, a leading provider of professional training for all the areas of regulatory compliance, is offering a webinar on September 24.
